Vale – Paul Mitchell

Vale – Paul Mitchell

It is with deep sadness that the Board wishes to advise Members of the unfortunate passing of long-time Club Member, Director and Life Member Paul Mitchell. After a battle with cancer Paul passed away on 27th September 2022.

Paul was well known in the Gippsland community and established many friendships through his work at the Commonwealth Employment Service and later Gippsland Group Training.

Paul was a 30 Year Member of the Club since 1993, a passionate golfer and a great Club volunteer in many ways. He boasts an impressive record of service to the Club and served in many official positions including:

  • 14 years as a Director of Warragul Country Club
  • 14 years as WCC Board representative to the Men’s Golf Committee and more recently Women’s Golf Committee
  • 20 years as Committee Member of the Men’s Golf Committee
  • 19 years as Secretary of the Men’s Golf Committee

Paul was truly committed to representing the interests of all Golf & Social Members and he did this in a considered and caring way for two decades. During his time with the Golf Committee and Board he has contributed to the development of the Country Club across many aspects such as:

  • Major alterations/extensions to the Clubhouse
  • Golf Course development
  • Fairway improvements
  • Assistance in staff development/training
  • Gaming
  • Forward planning, including development of 5-year strategies for course development/building improvements/and financial stability
  • His significant role in staff recruitment in the area of apprentices for the Club and their training

Paul’s commitment to service and devotion to the Club was profound and was ultimately recognised by the Club when he was elected as a Life Member in 2021. Paul was an outstanding Member of this Club, and it is Members like Paul that make this Club the great Club that it is. He will be sadly missed by all.

The Club extends its heartfelt condolences to Dianne, Anna, Jill and all the Mitchell family.

Melbourne Cup Calcutta

Melbourne Cup Calcutta

Melbourne Cup Calcutta is back at the Warragul Country Club on Sunday 30th October 2022. The draw will commence at 3pm with the auction to follow. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any till in the venue. Finger food will be provided to ticket holders during the Calcutta.

Rules & How It Works:

Raffle tickets are $5 each and are sold leading up to Sunday 30th October 2022. The ticket sales create a pool of money called the starting pool.

On the Calcutta afternoon a ticket is drawn against each horse in the Melbourne Cup field in saddle cloth order e.g 1-24. The person who owns the ticket becomes the owner of that horse. That horse is then auctioned and sold to the highest bidder as are all 24 Melbourne cup horses.

At this point, the order of the auction process will be at the discretion of the club and will be finalised on Sunday. Anyone can bid on any horse during the auction.

If the original owner of the horse would like to buy their horse at auction, they must have the highest bid. However, the original owner only has to pay half the amount that they have successfully bid. This amount is then added to the “starting pool”.

If the successful bidder is not the original owner of the horse, they must pay the full amount of the bid. 50% of that price is added to the “starting pool”, and the other 50% goes to original owner of that horse. The successful bidder is now the new owner of that horse.

Buy your own raffle tickets or form a syndicate to enhance your chances of drawing a horse!

The prize money is divided up as follows:

1st Place = 60%

2nd Place = 20%

3rd Place = 15%

Last Place past the post = 5%

Calcutta tickets are on sale now and are available from any till in the venue.

Please note that there is NO money back for late scratching’s!

Golf Course Capital Improvements Plan

Golf Course Capital Improvements Plan

The Board have approved the latest recommendations for golf course improvements. The improvements that relate to Golf Holes 7, 8, 9 and 18 will commence immediately, and funding of $62,553 was approved by the Board to deliver the works to these four Holes. Our Course Superintendent will project manage and deliver these improvements and intends to complete them prior to the PGA Super 6, scheduled for the first week of December 2022.

OCM Golf has been engaged to scope and cost and prepare plans for the major works proposed for Holes 11 and 12. When these are provided by OCM Golf, the Board will consider the costs and the approval of the works.

Subject to this approval, it is proposed to complete these two Holes in Summer/Autumn of 2023.

Should Members have any queries or input in respect to the Plan, please direct those to your respective Golf Committee’s or the Director of Golf.
